Events

Official SHCA Events

Sleepy Hollow has a strong tradition of lively community gatherings that bring neighbors together for food, fun, and community service. These events are sponsored by SHCA and paid for by member dues. The social committee works hard to put these events together, and they are a great way to build family traditions, socialize with neighbors and keep up with neighborhood news.

Wine and Cheese Social

The annual Wine and Cheese Social does double duty as our biggest social event of the year and also the SHCA executive board election. For a modest ticket price, neighbors enjoy a wide variety of finger foods, cheeses, and desserts, as well as a selection of wines chosen especially for the event. Beer and alternative beverages are also available, and there are a number of door prizes offered by local businesses. The occasion is also used to welcome new SHCA members and the formally announce the leadership of the next year's executive board. The Wine and Cheese is a great way to enjoy an evening out with friends from the neighborhood and also support the Sleepy Hollow Citizens' Association.

Easter Egg Hunt

Each spring before Easter, neighborhood children gather for a neighborhood Easter egg hunt and spring celebration. The SHCA social committee hides hundreds of candy-stuffed eggs and kids come from all over the neighborhood to join in the fun. There are also snacks, crafts, games and, whenever possible, a visit from our local Fire and Rescue team. The firefighters give the kids a tour of the truck and answering questions by Sleepy Hollow residents. The annual Easter egg hunt is a cherished spring tradition for generations of Sleepy Hollow kids and their families.

Spring Picnic

The spring picnicis the first of two annual pot-luck picnics. The picnics always feature great food, easy conversation, and fun for the kids. Check The Legend or watch the Yahoo! Group to find out the picnic location and for dish assignments. The association provides hot dogs, beer, water, and sodas, and the residents always come through with a delicious variety of appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. In addition to your dish to share, you may want to bring a blanket or a lawn chair.

Fall Picnic

One of two annual pot-luck picnics, the fall picnic is also the start of the SHCA membership drive, when residents can renew their memberships and update their information to be included in the neighborhood directory. The picnics always feature great food, easy conversation, and fun for the kids. Check The Legend or watch the Yahoo! Group to find out the picnic location and for dish assignments. Halloween Parade

The Sleepy Hollow Halloween Parade is a fall tradition that is highly anticipated by kids and adults alike. On the Sunday before Halloween, the kids dress up in their costumes and meet at the triangle at the corner of Sleepy Ridge and Beechwood. There, the parade is led off by the Halloween-costumed marching band from Jeb Stuart High School. The parade route ends at the circle on Ichabod Place, where everyone enjoys a short band performance and a sweet snack. The afternoon ends with a hay ride (and a nap!).

Community Cleanups

SHCA organizes community cleanups four times a year to make sure our streets and common areas are free of litter and debris. Participation in the cleanups is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors and beautify the neighborhood at the same time.

How it works:

  • Bring gloves.
  • Meet at corner of South Street and Sylvan Drive to pick up safety vests and trash bags (provided thanks to VDOT's Adopt-a-Highway Program).
  • We focus on cleaning up along South Street, Holmes Run Road, Sleepy Hollow Road, and other areas as needed.

Can't join us on a Saturday morning? Everyone can help to maintain the Hollow's community appearance and safety every day by:

  • Maintaining your property's street-front free of litter and brush.
  • Removing trash and recycling containers from view between Thursday pickups.
  • Calling 703-802-3322 to schedule special pickups of brush or bulk items.

We also welcome adult volunteers to remove campaign and illegal signage from the Route 50 medians parallel to our community.
